Instructions for Authors

Submission of Articles and Communications

All manuscripts and associated files, proposed for publication should be sent by the Corresponding Author in a compressed/zip file, as an email attachment to:

Documents larger than 3MB should be uploaded to the IFRF FTP server, as follows:

  1. Point your web browser to: ftp://ftp.ifrf.net/pub/incoming/
  2. In the "File" menu of your browser, select the submenu "Upload file ..."
  3. Select the documents you wish to upload from your Hard Disk and accept your selection (by clicking on the Open/Ok button).
  4. Send a notification by e-mail to reminding us that you have uploaded your manuscripts and associated files on the FTP server.

This then will be handled by the Editor in Chief, who will send the files to two appropriate referees.

They will annotate the file with comments and requests for additions/deletions/modifications and return it to the Secretariat. The Secretariat will then return it to the Corresponding Author, for further editing prior to publication.

On receipt of the final manuscript, the Secretariat will transmit the files to the Communications Centre for the preparation of the publication file (Portable Document Format - pdf - file). In the email to which the initial compressed/zip file is attached, there should be a statement that the proposal's content is unpublished material that has not being submitted for publication elsewhere.

When an article by the author(s) is cited in the proposed article as "in press", a copy of this article should accompany the proposed article and should be included in the compressed file.

Articles and Communications Files

The Article/Communication should be submitted as a single "Word Processor" file containing all graphics, photos, tables, equations etc., embedded in file (see below for further formatting details). If the authors intend to add audio/video illustrations they should contact the Journal for individual advice.

Currently acceptable word processing packages

Macintosh: WordPerfect3.5, MicroSoft Word (all versions), MacWriteII, MacWrite 5.0 (usually), WriteNow2.0 and FrameMaker 5.5.
Windows based systems: WordPerfect up to version 8, MicroSoft Word (all versions) and FrameMaker 5.5.
Unix: TeX and LaTeX users: An Journal template is being designed at the present time, and will be posted on this page in due course. In the meantime, Unix based authors should use an appropriate article template.

Length

There is no restriction on the length of full-length articles. However, succinct writing is encouraged and undue length may be a cause for rejection.

Communications should be no longer than the Title page plus the equivalent of 4 pages of A4/Letter including text and all graphic illustrations and tables, formatted as described below.

Style

Please study the example publication as a guide to style.

Articles should be organised as follows:

First "Title" Page

The Title page should include title, author(s), affiliation(s), and the complete address of the corresponding author (address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address).

Second Page

  • A one-paragraph abstract of 100-300 words.
  • Keywords
  • Nomenclature (if required). If nomenclature is extensive this section can of course be carried over onto a third page.

If symbols are used extensively, a nomenclature list arranged alphabetically, with subscript and superscript symbols listed separately, should be provided. Otherwise, symbols should be identified when first, used in the text.

Following Pages

  • Introduction;
  • Main Body;
  • Conclusions;
  • Acknowledgements;
  • References;
  • Appendices.

If your paper is divided into sections and subsections, please use the format adopted here, in which first-level headings are in bold capitals, centered on the line.

Second level headings Second level headings should be in bold lower case (initial capital), left aligned.

Third-level headings. Third-level headings should be placed at the beginning of a paragraph. Capitalize the whole subhead (if possible, make the subhead italic).
